It’s always helpful to have a strategy for your family’s upcoming move. Whether you’re just moving to a new neighborhood in the same city or hours away, there are a few easy ways to ensure that your day will be as “green” as possible—both cost-efficiently, and environmentally.
Better Efficiency for Your Eco-Friendly Move
Every bit counts. And fortunately, it doesn’t take much effort to make your move eco-friendly. See what you can cross off this list and enjoy the savings!
1. Reduce what you pack
Your move can happen faster and more affordably when you aren’t spending time packing up every single thing you already own. What can you sell during a weekend garage sale? What can be donated? Loading up your car with various items for a donation drop-off is a lot easier than organizing pieces one by one into different box sizes. Plus, it’s always nice when what you don’t want anymore can be useful for someone else instead of being sent to the landfill.
2. Visit the recycling center
There might be some items in your garage, basement, or laundry room that have specific rules for safe recycling. Again, rather than bringing everything into your new home, consider doing a quick drop-off. The recycling facility can dispose of the material properly, and then you won’t have to figure out how to organize items you no longer need in your new space.
3. Get creative with what you own
Another part of recycling is to use your towels, sheets, and other bedding as packing supplies. Try wrapping your lamps or fragile décor in the linens. They’ll likely work better than packing peanuts. Then use newspapers or magazines to wrap your dishes. It’s a great way to cut costs on bubble wrap, and definitely more environmentally-friendly.
4. Ask around for old materials
Watch your spending by just asking around for any traditional moving and packing supplies that you can find. You may not need to buy as many boxes as you initially expected. If you know someone who has recently moved, see if they’d be willing to let you have their old boxes to use for yourself.
It never hurts to ask local retail stores or businesses for moving materials either. They could be receiving shipments on a daily basis. In which case, they might be happy to have you take some of those boxes or packing materials to help clear out their backroom.
5. Limit the trips
There will always be a cost associated with moving and getting your belongings from point A to point B. The price of fuel, and even just taking time out of your schedule, can definitely be a nuisance if you aren’t streamlining your process. But a great local moving company can help!
